The PET-CT itself is identical in all three. What changes is what else gets done while you are in Shanghai. The scan on its own can be finished in a day, which is the simplest arrangement — though most people who travel for imaging alone find the arithmetic disappointing once the flight is priced in. A whole-body PET-CT at a Singapore private provider starts from around S$2,398 — roughly US$1,850. Ours is US$999. But a return flight and a night's accommodation will absorb most of that difference, and MediSave narrows it further: from 1 January 2026 the outpatient scan withdrawal limit doubled to S$600 per patient per year, which applies to PET, CT and MRI ordered through a specialist outpatient clinic or polyclinic. For one scan, on its own, the honest answer is that flying is rarely worth it. What changes the arithmetic is scope: the same budget that buys a single scan in Singapore covers considerably more ground in Shanghai. A CT scan shows structure — where things are and what shape they are in. A PET scan shows metabolic activity — which tissue is consuming glucose unusually fast. Combined in one machine, the two are read together, so an area of high activity can be located precisely rather than merely noted. This is why PET-CT is used for staging and follow-up in oncology, and why it is not a general-purpose replacement for other examinations. Two things worth knowing before you compare anywhere. The Ministry of Health page showing PET/CT charges of S$2,310–S$3,623 is still online, but the survey behind it dates from 2005 — treat it as history, not a current guide. And a lower price does not mean older equipment: National University Hospital brought Singapore's first next-generation total-body PET/CT into service in 2025, so the most advanced scanner in this comparison is not necessarily the one furthest from home. A PET-CT is not a routine annual check for healthy people. It combines an injected radiotracer with a CT scan, so the radiation dose is meaningfully higher than most imaging, and in people without symptoms or risk factors it frequently finds areas of mild activity that turn out to be nothing — but only after further tests, further cost and several weeks of worry. If you are well and simply want a thorough look at your health, a full screening is the more appropriate starting point, and we will say so rather than book you a scan. It also sees the lining of the stomach and bowel poorly, which is why endoscopy remains the examination for those. Two quotes described as "PET-CT" can be different examinations. These are the questions that make prices comparable — ask them of us, and ask them of anyone else you are considering. The same institution operates a PET/MR scanner alongside its PET-CT, and we can arrange it at approximately US$2,500. Be aware that this is more than a PET-CT costs in Singapore, so the case for travelling rests on the scan itself rather than on price. PET/MR is also available in Singapore — Gleneagles Hospital offers it — and it is only the better choice for particular questions, typically neurological, head and neck, or pelvic.
